3 Best Protein Bars Without Added Sugar

By | February 15, 2015

Protein bars with no added sugar are a good snack for people avoiding sugar, watching their weight, restricting carb intake or who are health conscious. By choosing the right protein bars, they can be a healthier alternative to candy bars for satisfying your sweet tooth and hunger while helping you to better manage your weight or blood glucose level.

While these protein bars contain no added sugar, they are usually sweetened with sugar substitutes.

What are Sugar Substitutes?

Sugar substitutes offer the sweetness of sugar but with low or virtually no calories. Generally, there are 4 types of sugar substitutes:

1. Natural Sweeteners

Natural sweeteners include honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, coconut sugar, fruit juice concentrate and molasses. Although natural sweeteners may seem like a healthier option, they still provide substantial calories.

2. Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners are synthetic sugar substitutes, which are made from chemicals or natural substances. They are many times sweeter than regular sugar and yet, provide virtually no calories.

Eg: aspartame, saccharin, sucralose

3. Sugar Alcohols

Sugar alcohols (or polyols) are carbohydrates derived from plants such as fruits and vegetables, and can also be manufactured. Despite the name, they are neither sugar nor alcohol. Although not calorie free, they contain fewer calories than regular sugar.

Sugar alcohols are incompletely digested in the small intestine. When they reach the large intestine, they are fermented by colonic bacteria. As a result, consumption (or over consumption) of sugar alcohols can cause side effects such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and abdominal pain. If you have a pre-existing gastrointestinal condition, you may want to avoid or limit your consumption of sugar alcohols.

Eg: maltitol, mannitol, xylitol, sorbitol, erythritol

4. Herbal Sugar Substitute/ Herbal Sweetener

Herbal sweeteners such as stevia and lo han guo (monk fruit) are natural and healthier alternatives to artificial sweeteners.

Both stevia and lo han guo have been used as a sweetener for centuries.

Stevia is a perennial shrub, native to Paraguay, but also extensively grown in other countries. It contains glycosides, compounds that are 100-300 times sweeter than regular sugar. Stevioside, the primary glycoside, and other related compounds including rebaudioside A, are extracted from stevia leaves and used as a non-caloric sweetener.

Lo han guo or monk fruit is a member of the gourd family. It is grown in China, and is used as a food, beverage and traditional medicine. Monogrosides are the compounds that contribute to the sweetness of lo han guo extract. The main component, mogroside V is more than 300 times sweeter than sugar, and low in calories.

The Top 3 Protein Bars With No Added Sugar

While there are numerous no sugar protein bars on the market, most of them are made with soy (here’s why I’m against consuming unfermented, GMO soy), artificial additives and unhealthy ingredients.

Quite often, nutrition labels will list minimal amounts of sugars – ie. naturally occurring sugars – even though the protein bars have no added sugar. Naturally occurring  sugars are naturally present in foods such as dairy products, fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. This type of sugars are not considered added sugars.

Here are the 3 best protein bars with no added sugar…

1. Bhu Fit Bars

These are made from the best ingredients – freshest, organic (where possible),  non-GMO, whole food, fair trade and sustainable.

Bhu Fit bars are sweetened with monk fruit and natural sugars from tapioca fiber, shredded coconut, dried apples and dried cherries. Hence, each bar has 1g of sugars only!

ZERO: soy, gluten, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols.
